Setting Goals In The Short Term During Divorce
It is almost impossible to set a time framed long term goal while going through the divorce process.
There are too many variables outside of your control, such as, your spouse’s time frame, the lawyer’s workloads, the mediator’s workloads, the courts availabilities, etc, etc.
So instead of getting angry or frustrated about this, take control of goals you can set yourself that will be reachable in the short term.
These can be personal goals like getting fit or changing your diet. They can be associated with the divorce like cleaning out the attic or packing the garage.
The goals you set yourself need to be reachable without external influences getting in the way.
It is a really good idea to have a short term reachable goal to look forward to at this time. It will make you feel you are accomplishing something while in a waiting pattern with the divorce.
Try these criteria:
1. Make your goal personal so that it only needs you to complete it.
2. Make your goal something you really want accomplished not something you think needs doing or other people tell you to do.
3. Make your goal time framed so there is some urgency to completing it, such as ‘by next Friday I will…..’ or ‘on the 13.4.10 I will have…’
4. Make your goal about your new life and how you want to be in your new life.
5. Reward yourself when you reach your goal and celebrate your ability to reach goals.
6. Set another one.
When you set your goals remember that they can be made into smaller chunks. Say for instance you need to clean out the attic and have decided to do it in three weeks.
Divide the jobs into lots, and give those lots a time frame. So you would start with getting the items necessary for the job, boxes, garbage bags, cockroach bombs, whatever. This could be done on day 1.
Have a look at the attic work out how long you think it will take and divide that into smaller time slots. One hour Friday night, three hours Saturday morning, three hours Sunday morning, one hour to rubbish tip and charity store Sunday afternoon. Your job will be complete in no time and the overwhelming feeling that comes from having a massive job to complete will be drastically minimized by chunking down into these smaller slots.
Small personal goals that you set for yourself and complete will only help to improve self esteem and happiness.
