Marilyn was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada in 1962. She lived on a farm near Medicine Hat until she was 18 years old. After completing high school at Medicine Hat High School, Marilyn embarked on an 8 year post-secondary educational journey that resulted in her earning 3 degrees and attending 3 different post-secondary educational institutions:
- Medicine Hat College, Medicine Hat, Alberta
- University of Lethbridge, Lethbridge, Alberta
- University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta

Marilyn articled in Calgary, Alberta at McLeod Lyle Smith McManus for one year after completing law school. She then worked for 8 months at a small firm in Calgary, prior to moving back to Medicine Hat. Marilyn began work at Niblock and Company LLP in April 1990. She became a partner in 1993 and has worked there ever since.
Marilyn is married to John Stodalka, who is also a partner at Niblock and Company LLP. They have 4 children. Erin, Mark and Drew were John’s children before he met Marilyn, and they are all adults. Paul (born in 1997) is a teenager and attends Medicine Hat High School.
Marilyn’s interest in matrimonial law led her to concentrate on that area early in her career. She had experience in this area from a summer working at Student Legal Services in Edmonton. In about 2004, Marilyn decided to focus on non-Court matrimonial law. She is an experienced Mediator and Collaborative . Marilyn has engaged in many training and educational opportunities to improve her skills and continues to do so. Marilyn Lawyer no longer takes on any matters that involve the Courts. If Mediation or Collaboration are not involved, Marilyn will also work with a client to assist with respectful negotiations, but if Court applications are necessary or need to be responded to, Marilyn will swiftly transition the file to a Court lawyer in her firm or in the community.
Marilyn also does simple incorporations, residential and some agricultural real estate, wills, pre-marriage contracts, estates and provides notary services, including travel authorizations.
Marilyn helps instruct the Parenting After Separation Seminar on a regular basis. She has also been an instructor at various public legal education seminars from time to time.
